FESTIVALS IN THE MUNICIPALITY OF BETANCURIA
The main festivals in the municipality are:
Festival in Honor of the Virgen de la Peña. In Vega de Rio Palmas is celebrated the third Saturday in September each year. She is the patron saint of the island. Offering procession in her Honor, is the Friday before.
Peña Festival. Two parties, held on 5 August and 18 December, Vega de Rio Palmas, with local character.
Festival in Honor of Saint Buenaventura. July 14 is celebrated in Betancuria. He is the patron saint of the island. From the year 1625 was institutionalized this feast, although it held previously.
Festival of our Lady of the Conception. In Betancuria is celebrated on December 8. They have local character.
Festival of San Diego. Held in Betancuria, in the Hermitage of San Diego on November 13. The devotion to San Diego was widespread in the past, probably due to the fact that San Diego de Alcalá resided for some time in the Franciscan convent of Betancuria, and that according to tradition retreated to pray in a small cave which is located at the head of the Hermitage of San Diego.
Festival of Santa Ines. In Valle de Santa Inés is celebrated on January 21. It has local character. In the past it had great importance due to the fact that during the celebration of this Festival were chosen two aldermen “cadaneros”, representing the interests of the residents of the island in the Cabildo, principal organ of Government and administration.
Festival of St. Bartholomew. Held on August 24 in Valley of Santa Ines and has local character. For several decades, it is the most important Festival of this village.
